A thirteen year old trans-femme guitarist comes of age and finds her voice in Los Angeles after striking up an unlikely friendship with her next door neighbour - a washed-up elderly hair-metal rock star.

SYNOPSIS

When trans teenager SAM discovers that her new mysterious neighbor is long-forgotten hair metal rock god RHINESTONE RON, guitarist of the moderately popular band MÄMMÖTH, the lonely teen makes it her mission to get to know the curmudgeonly old legend next door - revealing herself to be a talented guitar prodigy in her own right.

Under Ron's unconventional tutelage, the two strike up an unlikely partnership and prepare to take on the Sunset Strip one more time as Sam forms a band, navigates a new high school, and carves out a new identity for herself - all while teaching Ron that everyone deserves a second chance.

AUTHORS NOTE: Perhaps not a story I'm necessarily fully equipped to tell, but thought it was one worth exploring all the same - a trans coming-of-age story feels worth telling, and parallels between the queer community and the 80s hair metal scene make for an interesting cross-generational exploration of culture. Our protagonist Sam's struggles are universal - we've all experienced what it feels like to be an outcast, or to question our sexuality, to feel alone and in need of guidance. Don't say a teenager today wouldn't be obsessed with guitars and classic rock because I was obsessed with guitars and classic rock when I was 15 and that wasn't that long ago I swear.
